Casablanca's Everywhere, Man: From Classic Flick to Moroccan Mania
Okay, so I'm scrolling through the usual internet garbage fire, and I see "Casablanca" trending again. Seriously? Is it just me, or is this movie, like, the herpes of film culture? It keeps flaring up when you least expect it.
First, some film critic is waxing poetic about how Roger Ebert loved the darn thing. Fine. Ebert had taste. I get it. "Lost love and unsure futures," blah blah blah. But does that justify the endless parade of thinkpieces about a movie that came out before color TV was even a thing? I mean, give me a break.
Casablanca: The City, The Shirt, The…Highway?
Then I stumble across this article about Morocco gearing up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. And guess what city they keep name-dropping? You guessed it: Casablanca. Apparently, the "passion" of the local football fans is going to elevate the whole damn tournament. Okay, sure, maybe. But is it really that special?
And it's not just soccer. There's news about highway projects near Casablanca being completed ahead of schedule. "Next-generation expressways," they're calling them. As if a faster commute is going to solve all of Morocco's problems. Plus, there's some fashion brand called...you guessed it...Casablanca, opening a store in Beverly Hills. I think it all started as a shirt company. Now it's a "lifestyle". See Los Angeles: Casablanca store opening.
Casablanca. Casablanca. Casablanca. It's freakin' everywhere.
Is it the exotic name? The romantic image conjured by the film? Or is it just a really effective marketing ploy? I mean, let's be real, it ain't like the city is some pristine paradise. I've seen the pictures. It's a bustling, chaotic, modern urban center... just like any other big city. So, what gives?
The "Casablanca" Brand: Selling You Dreams
The football article mentions Hakim Ziyech signing with Wydad Casablanca. Good for him, I guess. But the article calls it "a significant boost for Moroccan football." Really? One guy? Suddenly, the whole league is elevated? The hype is unreal.

The article also states "Events like the Casablanca derby prove that when it comes to football passion, spectacle, and creating unforgettable sporting experiences, Morocco is already at the top of its game and ready to shine on the continental stage.” That's…a lot to unpack.
It's like they're trying to sell us a dream. A dream of exotic adventure, of passionate romance, of…well, of really smooth traffic flow, I guess. And they're using the "Casablanca" brand to do it.
Here's the thing: I'm not saying Casablanca is a bad place. I'm not saying the movie is overrated (okay, maybe a little). I'm just saying that the way this city is being marketed feels…manipulative. Like they're trying to capitalize on a faded image to sell us something that doesn't quite exist.
Then again, maybe I'm the crazy one here. Maybe everyone else is perfectly happy to buy into the "Casablanca" fantasy. Maybe I'm just too cynical to appreciate the romance of it all. But honestly...
The Ultimate Tourist Trap?
Look, I get it. Every place has its marketing angle. Paris has romance. New York has ambition. Los Angeles has…well, Los Angeles has a lot of plastic surgery. But "Casablanca" feels different. It feels like they're selling you a movie, not a city.
And the worst part is, it's probably working. People are going to flock to Morocco, expecting to find Humphrey Bogart sipping cocktails in a smoky bar. And they're going to be disappointed. Or maybe they won't be. Maybe they'll find something even better. I don't know, man. I just don't know.
